Human Hybrids series by Clare Solomon

A Destructive Power (Human Hybrids 0.5)

AUTHOR’S BLURB: Scientists have genetically engineered five human-hybrid races known as werewolves, vampires, dragons, sensers and wendigoes. The first four races live amongst humans in a sometimes volatile peace. Wendigoes are cannibals who kill other races and have been at war with them for decades.

Temerin joins a newly formed HyCO, an organisation that traditionally has a reputation for harassing hybrids. Lachlan is a dragon. The two of them become lovers, neither knowing the truth of the other.

Temerin thought he would be solving crimes and helping the people of Invercade in his new job but the HyCO leader seems determined to get into fights with the other species’ and Lachlan’s brother is among the hybrids who are growing increasingly angry about this.

Temerin and Lachlan’s relationship risks being torn apart by friends, family and colleagues who are not only against them being together but are heading for a violent confrontation. When a wendigo appears and starts a killing spree Temerin’s HyCO is brought in to hunt for the monster. As events escalate will Temerin and Lachlan find a way to stay together and will they both survive?

MY REVIEW: Definitely meant as a world-builder. It’s got an okay if mediocre romance storyline. Needed to be broken down a bit, maybe given some history, but maybe that’s coming in the first book, instead?

Coexistence (human hybrids1)-CS

Coexistence (Human Hybrids #1)

AUTHOR’S BLURB: Scientists have genetically engineered five human hybrid races known as werewolves, vampires, dragons, sensers and wendigoes. The first four races coexist with humans in relative peace. The fifth one wants to butcher the others and they are getting stronger.

Jaspal ‘Pal’ Khatri is nearly killed and forced to leave his home with a werewolf pack in Oxford, England when the local HyCO group leads a mob of anti-hybrid rioters against them. He travels to the Highlands of Scotland for a fresh start and meets Brand, a werewolf still grieving after the murder of his lover, Kye, a year ago. He and Brand find a dead vampire and Pal is suddenly in the nightmare situation of being accused of the murder. There is a link between this death and that of Kye and Brand works for another branch of HyCO so, to prove his innocence, Pal must join the organisation he loathes and try to ignore his growing feelings for Brand as they work to uncover the real killer. Can they solve the case in time or will they become the murderer’s next victims?

MY REVIEW: This had potential, but it was just never seized. Never from a lack of love or interest on the author’s part, but more a lack of ability to cut the characters loose and them be a little crazy and do a little unexpected things and be unrestrained. Even if it’s just in their heads. They were all so wooden and predictable and even the abrupt shift and sudden “I love yous” that came from nowhere.
I have never had a book consistently keep putting me to sleep. Even writing the review. Until this one. Reading has been known to keep me up for days. This book’s difference means something in my little world.
It’s not bad, but it needs work to be more than okay.

Blood n choice (human hybrids2)-CS

Blood and Choice (Human Hybrids #2)

AUTHOR’S BLURB: Scientists have genetically engineered five human hybrid races known as werewolves, vampires, dragons, sensers and wendigoes. The first four races coexist with humans in relative peace. The fifth one wants to slaughter the others.

Years ago Liam faced the destruction of his village in Ireland by wendigoes who murdered nearly everyone in his life. Now, working in Invercade HyCO and still tormented by the past, the only person he has left is his best friend, Tig. The two of them kill a wendigo who has been living and working in the city for years and begin to unravel a plot by the creatures that could be more dangerous than anything they have experienced so far.

When Tig starts dating someone else Liam realises he is in love with him and his jealousy causes their friendship to start falling apart. Liam thinks his life can’t get much worse but wendigoes always find a way to prove him wrong and before long both their lives are in mortal danger.

MY REVIEW: This is one of those rare time times I’m going to compare books. In this instance, this is a better book than the first book in this series. The author seems to have developed a bit more, and loosened up a bit, though not as much as she needs to, to really let the story and the characters soar. But a much better job. My eyes got heavy a couple times, but I never fell asleep this time.
The world still is underdeveloped and the characters still too underdeveloped and restrained. But the premise is a good one, a very interesting one. I look forward to the final installment in this trilogy, oddly.

Deadly times (human hybdrids3)-CS

Deadly Times (Human Hybrids #3)

AUTHOR’S BLURB: Scientists have genetically engineered five human hybrid races known as werewolves, vampires, dragons, sensers and wendigoes. The first four races coexist with humans in relative peace. The fifth one wants to slaughter the others.

Theo’s arrival at the Invercade HyCO provokes desire, conflict and suspicion. Daelin, forced to work with him, can’t get over his resemblance to the lover who nearly destroyed Daelin’s life. The HyCO is at its most vulnerable when the truth about Theo’s secret agenda is finally revealed, but will he prove to be an ally or an enemy?

With sabotage from within the group and devastating battles being fought, the HyCO officers must face their worst fears in a war that not everyone will survive.
